The Threat is Small: A Painting Made of Microplastics

Inspired by the fluorescent, microplastic-labeling methods I use in my toxicology research at UT, I created The Threat is Small by developing a novel fluorescent, microplastic-based paint and applying it to a clear pane of glass under 365 nm UV light. The use of UV-fluorescent microplastics—specifically microfibers—as a painting medium is a new artistic and scientific approach designed to reveal the presence of microplastic pollution. With these newly developed methods, this may be the first painting of its kind. By painting a sea-green turtle composed of microplastics and depicting the breakdown process of plastic waste, I hope to visualize the massive yet microscopic threat that I study.
